Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musical family on 9 August 1963 in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel superstar Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. The singer began her singing career in the choir at the church she attended The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark when she was a child at the age of 15 was singing backing vocals professionally with her mother on Chaka Khan's 1978 smash Im Every Woman. Then, she performed backing vocals to Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls as well as her mom. She began working as a featured vocalist for the band from New York called Material as well. It was her quality of her work as a vocalist with them that attracted the attention of the major record companies, such as Arista who signed her in 1983. This is where she stayed for the rest the duration of her career. Whitney Houston, her debut album, released in 1985 was the highest-selling album for an unproven singer. Singles such as The Most Beautiful Love of All, How Can I Tell If You Give Good Love or Saving All My Love were all released off the album. The songs enabled Houston to earn seven US top tens which were higher than even those of The Beatles. It sold three million copies the first year as well as 25 million around the world. The album won her first six Grammy Awards. The 1987 follow-up album Whitney featuring the hit songs The Place Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was 1992's film The Bodyguard (1992) that sealed her place as one of the top-selling performers of all time. Though the movie was not highly appreciated and neither was her performance, the music of her Dolly Parton version I Will Always Love You reached the number one spot on both singles and albums charts in America for a period of time. It sold 44,000,000 copies. Her daughter Bobbi is born March of 1993, a year following her wedding to Bobby Brown. Her daily consumption of the drug was well-documented.
